Today, we are officially launching Kabrownie Screen, an open-source, offline-first screenplay writer built for writers who value privacy, portability, and focus.

Created by Kabrownie Digital, this app is designed to be lightweight, secure, and available on the devices you already use, whether you are on a desktop (Windows/Linux) or mobile (Android).

Privacy First: Your Script is Yours

The core philosophy behind Kabrownie Screen is simple: Your writing is nobody's business but yours.

  • Offline-First: Scripts, settings, characters, and scene suggestions are stored locally on your device.
  • Zero Tracking: No accounts, no advertising, no analytics, and no tracking pixels.
  • No Cloud Uploads: Draft files are only written when you decide to click "Save." We don't upload your work to the cloud in the background.

Note: The only time the app goes online is to download the open-source PDF.js library when you import a PDF (and the PDF is still processed locally on your machine).

  • Smart Pagination: The preview pages paginate automatically based on letter-page boundaries, so you always know how your script looks.
  • Starter Template: Not sure where to start? On first launch, the app opens "The Last Signal," a superhero starter template to get your creative juices flowing.

🖥 Run It on Anything

Whether you are writing in your office, on a train, or on your tablet, we have a build for you. We are currently in our first release (v1.0.0).

For Desktop

  • Windows: Grab the portable .exe file no installation required, just double-click and write.
  • Linux: We offer an .AppImage for the easiest experience, or a .deb package for Ubuntu/Debian users.
  • Note: As a first release, these builds are unsigned, so your OS might give you a security warning. You can verify the file integrity using the SHA256SUMS.txt file included in the release.

For Mobile

  • Android: You can build the APK from source or download it to run on your Android device.

  • Single Source of Truth: The www/index.html file serves as the core for the web editor.
