Why I built it

As a Blender animator, I depend on free, open-source, offline tools. When I started writing screenplays, I expected to find the same kind of app. Instead, most free options were outdated, paid, or cloud-only. I couldn't find one that was free, open source, and truly offline — so I built Hiiscript.

What it does

  • Screenplay formatting with title pages and page breaks
  • Fountain and Markdown export
  • Automatic preview pagination at the letter-page boundary
  • Character and scene Library, transferable as JSON
  • Undo/redo, find and replace, scene navigation, focus mode
  • Word, page, and runtime statistics
  • Drag-and-drop import and local PDF import via PDF.js
  • Recovery snapshots written to local browser storage while you edit
  • JSON draft files saved through a secure Electron preload bridge

Privacy

Hiiscript is offline-first. Scripts, settings, characters, and scene suggestions are stored locally on your device. The app has no accounts, advertising, analytics, tracking pixels, or background screenplay uploads. Draft files are written only when you choose Save.

PDF import may download the open-source PDF.js library from a public CDN the first time it is used. The PDF is processed locally in the app; no screenplay upload service is used.

Download

Hiiscript runs offline after installation. Pick the build for your system.

Windows portable — Download the latest portable app. Double-click it; no installation is required.

Windows installer — Download the latest Windows installer and run it.

Linux, easiest — Download the latest AppImage. Allow it to run as a program, then double-click it.

Ubuntu / Debian — Download the latest DEB package. Double-click it and choose Install.

Android — Download the latest Android APK. Open the downloaded file on your Android device to install it.

Download the latest release

Unsigned builds may show a Windows unknown-publisher warning. Tagged GitHub releases can be signed by configuring WINDOWS_CERTIFICATE_BASE64 and WINDOWS_CERTIFICATE_PASSWORD repository secrets; the release workflow publishes SHA-256 checksums automatically. Confirm that any file came from the official Hiiscript release page before opening it.

First launch

On first launch, Hiiscript opens The Last Signal, a clearly labeled superhero starter template. Create a new script or dismiss the notice when you are ready to begin your own screenplay. Choose + New for a blank script, or choose New from template for another copy of the superhero example.

Contribute

Hiiscript is built in the open, and contributions are welcome.

From the blog

I built a free, open-source, offline screenwriter because I couldn't find one

I'm a Blender animator. My whole pipeline is free, open source, and offline. When I started writing screenplays, I assumed I'd find the same kind of tool.

I didn't.

Most free screenwriters I tried were outdated. Some were free to try but paid to actually use. Others wanted an account and pushed everything to the cloud. Nothing matched what I wanted: free, open source, and truly offline.

So I built Hiiscript — an offline-first screenplay writer for Windows, Linux, and Android, built with Electron and Capacitor and released under the MIT License.

I'm an animator, not a professional screenwriter. I need writers to tell me what's wrong. Is the formatting usable for real drafts? What's missing from the Fountain export? Would you actually use the character/scene Library?
